View from Mehta Ghat, Varanasi

In Varanasi, the ghats rise steeply from the river bank into the city. There are staircases everywhere and the buildings seem to be built on top of each other in an improbably random way. Beautiful old buildings and new, uglier concrete ones, sit incongruously side by side. In the afternoons, the sky is full of kites. These sketches from Mehta Ghat capture the general disorderly look of the ghats. We later found out from a National Geographic article that the large building with domes on the left is Aurangzeb’s mosque, though two boatmen we asked there told us otherwise.
